Quick answers

How many days do you need in Madeira?

Five days is the sweet spot for a first trip – enough for Funchal, one coast, and a hiking day without feeling rushed. Three days covers Funchal and one big day trip; seven lets you add Porto Santo or a proper hiking day without rushing. See the 3-day, 5-day and 7-day plans, or the full trip-planning hub.

Do you need a car in Madeira?

Not if you're staying in Funchal and booking day tours – buses and taxis cover the city and most attractions. A hire car earns its cost if the west coast, Fanal Forest or the central peaks are on your list, since public transport out there is thin. See Madeira without a car and car rental.

How much does a trip to Madeira cost?

Budget roughly €80–120 per person per day, including a hotel, meals and one paid activity. A private airport transfer into Funchal runs from about €30 for the 20-minute drive. Full cost breakdown on the trip-planning hub.

When is the best time to visit Madeira?

May, June, September and October are the best all-round months – warm enough to swim, without August's peak crowds and prices. The sea is warmest August–October, around 23°C, and December–February is the wettest stretch. See Madeira weather by month.

Is Madeira better than Tenerife?

Both are volcanic Atlantic islands, but Madeira is the hikers' pick – levada trails and a genuine mountain range, against Tenerife's bigger resorts and Mount Teide. Read the full Madeira vs Tenerife comparison.
