Funchal is the default, and usually the right one

Most hotels, restaurants and tour pickups are in Funchal, so basing yourself there cuts out transfer time to almost everything on this list, including things to do and the airport itself, which is 20 minutes east.

The lava-pool hotels are their own micro-decision

A cluster of hotels along the volcanic-rock seafront west of the marina build their pools into the black rock rather than a sandy beach – search infinity pool hotels if that view is the point of the trip. Families should compare that against family hotels further along the same stretch, which trade the drama for a proper kids' pool.

Porto Santo is a genuinely different trip

Porto Santo's one long golden beach is a 15-minute flight or 2.5-hour ferry from Madeira, and its hotels are almost all beach-resort style – see Porto Santo hotels. It only makes sense as an add-on of 2+ nights, not a day trip.
