Madeira in December: Weather, Christmas & What to Do (2026)

December is one of the best-value times to visit Madeira – mild rather than cold, green, and quietly festive. Funchal puts on famous Christmas lights through the month and one of Europe's biggest New Year firework displays over the bay, while the levadas and peaks stay walkable on clear days. It's wetter than summer and the sea is too cool for most swimmers, but for a warm-ish winter break with atmosphere, it's hard to beat. Here's the weather, the festivities and what to do.

Quick Takeaways
  1. 01December is mild, not cold – think layers and a rain jacket, not winter coats; the island stays green and walkable on clear days.
  2. 02It's the festive season: Funchal's Christmas lights run through December, building to a huge New Year fireworks display over the bay.
  3. 03Expect more rain and cloud than summer, especially on the north and the peaks, so keep plans flexible and chase the clear mornings.
  4. 04The sea is cool (around 19–20°C), so it's not a swimming month – this is a walking, sightseeing and festivities trip.
  5. 05New Year is the one peak period – flights and hotels book up far ahead and prices jump; the rest of December is quieter and better value.

December weather in Madeira

Madeira earns its "island of eternal spring" tag in winter: December days in Funchal sit around 16–20°C, with nights near 13°C – mild rather than cold. The catch is rain. December is one of the wetter months, and cloud tends to sit on the north coast and the high peaks, so a clear sunrise on Pico do Arieiro is more of a gamble than in summer.

The pattern, as ever, is the microclimate: the sunny south stays the driest and warmest, while the north and the mountains catch the weather. Plan flexibly, do the peak and boat days on your clearest mornings, and keep the lower, southern walks for cloudier ones. Pack layers, a waterproof and proper shoes; you won't need a heavy coat.

Christmas and New Year in Funchal

This is December's real draw. From early in the month Funchal switches on an elaborate Christmas-lights display across the city and the hillside, turning the bay into a glowing amphitheatre after dark – a genuine spectacle locals are proud of. The markets, nativity scenes and festive buzz build through the month.

Then comes the headline: Funchal's New Year's Eve fireworks, once listed as the world's largest display, fired from the city and the surrounding hills in a vast arc over the bay. Cruise ships gather offshore to watch. If you come for New Year, book everything – flights, hotels, dinner – well ahead, as it's the one period that sells out and spikes in price.

Heads up
New Year is peak season in Madeira, the opposite of the quiet rest of December. Flights and hotels for the 28 Dec–2 Jan window fill months in advance and cost far more, so either book very early or aim for mid-December, which is calmer and much better value.

Things to do in December

Outside the festivities, December is a fine month for the island's core experiences, weather permitting. Clear mornings are still good for the Pico do Arieiro sunrise and for levada walks – cooler, quieter and green, though you'll want layers at altitude. The west-coast tour and whale watching both run year-round, and a Madeira wine tasting or a Funchal food tour makes a perfect all-weather afternoon if the rain rolls in.

What December isn't is a beach month – the sea is too cool for most, and Porto Santo is quiet. Treat it as a walking, sightseeing and festive-city trip rather than a sun-and-sand one. For how the month compares with the rest of the year, see our best time to visit Madeira guide.

Choose this if...
Come in December if you want a mild, green, atmospheric winter break – Christmas lights, New Year fireworks and walkable trails on clear days – and you don't mind some rain and a sea that's too cool to swim in. Great value outside the New Year peak.
Avoid this if...
Pick a different month if you're after beach weather and reliable sun for hiking – the swimming is best from late summer into autumn, and the clearest hiking conditions favour spring and autumn over a wetter December.
