Which hotel should you book for a Madeira honeymoon?

Reid's Palace

The Cliff Bay

PortoBay's 5-star on a private peninsula just west of the centre, with indoor and outdoor pools above the sea and steps down to a bathing platform. It is walkable into Funchal, which not every clifftop hotel here is.

Book it if the honeymoon is built around dinner. Il Gallo d'Oro holds two Michelin stars, awarded in 2017, plus a Green Star from 2022 under chef Benoît Sinthon. Estalagem da Ponta do Sol

A modernist Design Hotels member, also in the MICHELIN Guide, on a clifftop in Ponta do Sol, the sunniest town on the island, about 30 minutes' drive west of Funchal. Fifty-four minimalist rooms, each with a private balcony over the Atlantic.

Quinta da Casa Branca

A 5-star in the MICHELIN Guide's hotel selection: a 19th-century manor house with modern garden rooms set in a 28,000 m² botanical garden, a short walk from the seafront near the marina.

The Views Baía

The value pick, and adults-only, in São Pedro above the São João fortress, about a 15-minute walk down to the seafront. Two pools, the Four Feelings Spa, and balconies facing either the Atlantic or the mountains behind the city.

Savoy Palace

When and where to base
