Madeira's luxury hotels cluster along the Funchal clifftops and seafront, where 5-star resorts trade on sea views, serious spas and some of Portugal's best dining. The choice runs from the island's legendary grande dame, Reid's Palace, to sleek modern flagships and intimate garden quintas. If you want the short version, browse Madeira's 5-star hotels and book early – the best ones sell out. Below are six of the best and who each suits.

- 01Madeira's luxury is concentrated in Funchal, mostly on the clifftops west of the centre – you're paying for sea views and spas, not beachfront.
- 02There's a real split: heritage grandes dames with gardens and old-world service versus modern flagships with rooftop pools and design interiors.
- 03Some of Portugal's best restaurants are inside these hotels, so a stay can double as a fine-dining trip without leaving the building.
- 04Half-board is often worth it here – the in-house restaurants are a draw, and Funchal's clifftop hotels involve a taxi into town for dinner otherwise.
- 05The top names sell out months ahead for spring and autumn, so book early; rates indicative – always check your dates.
Reid's Palace
The island's most famous hotel, and the benchmark for old-world luxury in Madeira. Reid's Palace, now a Belmond hotel, has presided over the Funchal clifftops since 1891, with subtropical gardens dropping to the sea, afternoon tea on the terrace and a guest list that runs from Churchill to royalty. It's grand, traditional and unhurried – the choice if you want heritage and impeccable service over contemporary cool. Check Reid's Palace rates.
The Cliff Bay
PortoBay's flagship is the foodie's luxury pick: a clifftop 5-star with a private sea-water access point, two pools and Il Gallo d'Oro, Madeira's Michelin-starred restaurant. Rooms have balconies over the Atlantic, and it's an easy walk or short hop into Funchal. Pick it for the dining and the polished, contemporary feel. Check The Cliff Bay rates.
Savoy Palace
The modern statement hotel on the Funchal seafront – a striking, wave-shaped tower with a rooftop infinity pool and sky bar, a vast spa, and several restaurants. It's the flashiest of the bunch and the one to choose for a contemporary, amenity-heavy stay with the best rooftop views in the city. Check Savoy Palace rates.
The Vine
A design hotel right in the centre of Funchal, which sets it apart from the clifftop crowd. The draw is the rooftop pool and bar with city-and-sea views, smart interiors themed around the island's wine, and the fact that you can walk straight out into the old town and the market. Best if you want luxury plus a central, walkable base. Check The Vine rates.
Quinta da Casa Branca
For something more intimate, this boutique quinta sets modern rooms within mature subtropical gardens, a short walk from the seafront. It's quieter and more private than the big resorts – a manor-house-meets-design-hotel feel with a good restaurant and a calm pool. The pick for couples wanting boutique luxury over a large hotel. Check Quinta da Casa Branca rates.
Melia Madeira Mare
The most accessible of the six on price, on the Funchal Lido seafront promenade. It delivers the 5-star essentials – sea-view rooms, an indoor and outdoor pool, a spa – at a gentler rate than the clifftop grandes dames, and the Lido location puts you on the seafront walk with easy access to the sea pools. Good value luxury for a first taste of Madeira's high end. Check Meliá Madeira Mare rates.
Where luxury sits in Madeira
Nearly all of it is in Funchal, and mostly on the clifftops just west of the centre around the Lido area, where the hotels can offer sea views and sea-water access in place of the sandy beaches Madeira doesn't have. That's the trade-off to understand: you're buying clifftop views, pools and spas, not a beach. For the full picture of bases across the island, see our where to stay in Madeira guide, and if you're travelling without children, the adults-only hotels round-up overlaps heavily with this list.
Funchal also makes the best luxury base because it's where the island's tours and day trips pick up – you can settle into one hotel and let the levada walks and west-coast days come to you.
