October is one of Madeira's best all-round months: still warm, with the sea at its yearly peak for late swims, yet cool enough for comfortable hiking, and quieter than summer. Funchal days sit in the low-20s°C and the south stays largely sunny. The catch is that the wetter season is creeping back, so the north and peaks catch more cloud. Here's the weather and what to do.
- 01October is a dual-purpose month – warm enough to swim and cool enough to hike – which makes it one of the best all-rounders for a first visit.
- 02The sea is at its warmest of the year (around 23–24°C) because it lags the air, so this is one of the best months for swimming and boat trips.
- 03Crowds ease after the summer peak: quieter trails, easier bookings and better value than August, with the sunny south still reliably warm.
- 04Rain returns gradually through the month, more toward the end, and the north and peaks catch cloud – keep peak and boat days for clear mornings.
- 05Days are shortening and the light turns autumnal; flowers fade, but the island stays green and the walking is at its most comfortable.
October weather in Madeira
October keeps much of the summer's warmth without its heat. Funchal daytime highs sit around 22–23°C, nights stay near 17°C, and the sunny south coast is still largely dry early in the month. The sea is the headline: because it lags the air, it's at its warmest of the year now, around 23–24°C, so this is genuinely a swimming and boat month rather than the end of one.
What changes through October is the rain. The wetter season starts to return, especially in the second half, and the microclimate sharpens – the north coast and the high peaks catch cloud and showers while Funchal stays brighter. Pack for both: light layers and swimwear, but also a rain jacket and proper shoes. Do the peak and boat days on your clearest mornings, and keep the lower, southern walks for cloudier ones.
Why October works for almost any trip
This is the month's real appeal. Few places let you swim in a warm sea in the morning and walk a cool mountain levada in the afternoon, but October in Madeira does. The air is warm enough for the coast and the natural pools, the sea is at its peak, and yet temperatures on the trails are far more comfortable than the midsummer heat – ideal for the levada walks and the higher peaks.
It's also a value sweet spot. The summer crowds thin out after the school holidays, so trails are quieter, restaurant tables and tours are easier to book, and prices ease back from their August peak – all without giving up the warmth.
For a first visit that wants a bit of everything, October is hard to beat. For how it stacks up against the rest of the year, see our best time to visit Madeira guide.
Things to do in October
With warm water and comfortable trails, October suits the island's full range. Clear mornings are ideal for the Pico do Arieiro sunrise and for the levadas, cooler and quieter than in summer.
The warm sea makes it a strong month for whale and dolphin watching and for a swim day at the best beaches and sea pools, with Porto Santo's golden sand still inviting. If the rain rolls in, a Madeira wine tasting makes a perfect all-weather afternoon.
What October isn't is a sure thing on the heights – the returning cloud means the peaks and the north are more of a gamble than in high summer, so stay flexible. If you'd rather the quietest, best-value version of this kind of trip and don't mind cooler water, the following month is calmer still: see Madeira in November.
Whichever way the forecast breaks, October rewards a flexible plan – chase the clear mornings for the heights and the sea, and keep the south for grey spells. For ideas to fill the days, see our things to do in Madeira guide.
