Things to do in August
The Rali da Madeira runs 30 July – 1 August 2026 – the island's big motorsport weekend, long known as the Madeira Wine Rally. Then comes the Festa de Nossa Senhora do Monte on 14–15 August, Madeira's largest religious pilgrimage, when thousands walk up to Monte's church overnight for the dawn mass. 15 August is a public holiday, so expect closures and busy roads.
The Madeira Wine Festival opens on 23 August and runs into mid-September, with most of its harvest events falling in September. For the rest of the month, the sea is the headline – August is made for beach days and sea-pool swims.
